Cannabis seeds in Australia — the grower’s guide

Your season runs opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. You sow in October and finish in April, and on the east coast your flowering window lands in the most humid part of the year. This is the guide we wish existed when Australian growers started asking us for one.

Why your latitude decides what you should buy

Photoperiod cannabis flowers when daylight shortens after the December solstice. How sharply your daylight changes across the year depends on how far south you are — and that single number changes everything about what will finish where you live.

Hobart at 42.9°S gets a daylight swing of more than five hours and a strong, unambiguous flowering trigger. Darwin at 12.5°S gets about eighty minutes, which is barely a signal at all, and photoperiod plants grown there often never flower properly. Between those extremes sits every other Australian city.

The second number that matters is summer humidity. Warm nights plus damp air plus a dense flower equals botrytis, and botrytis moves through a cola in about forty-eight hours. That is why a strain that thrives in Perth will rot in Brisbane.

Darwin is the exception that proves the rule

At 12.5°S the daylight swing is too small to reliably trigger flowering, and the monsoon would rot anything that did. Top End growers run the dry season — roughly April to September — which is the opposite of every other city on this list. Any seed bank giving you one national sowing date has not thought about it.

Australian growing questions

Is it legal to buy cannabis seeds in Australia?

No. Cannabis seeds are a prohibited import under Australian federal law, and possession and cultivation are offences in every state and territory. The ACT permits limited personal cultivation under territory law since January 2020, but that does not make importing seeds lawful. Anyone telling you it is a grey area is selling you something.

When should I sow cannabis seeds in Australia?

For most of the country, late September through October, harvesting in March or April. Melbourne and Canberra start later and finish later because of frost. Darwin inverts the calendar entirely and runs April to September. Autoflowers are far more flexible because they flower on age rather than daylight.

Why do my buds rot before harvest?

Botrytis, and it is the most common cause of failed Australian outdoor grows. Your flowering window falls in the humid back half of summer, and dense flowers hold moisture through warm nights. The fix is genetics with open bud structure, or autoflowers timed to finish before the humidity arrives.

Autoflower or photoperiod for an Australian grow?

Autoflower if you are on the humid east coast, starting late, in a short season, or growing your first plant. Photoperiod if you are in Perth or Adelaide with a full season available and you want the bigger plant.
