What is Purple Haze Weed Seed?

Purple Haze is part of the purple weed family, where it presents a unique purple hue. This colouring can range anywhere from much lighter purples, right down to deep indigo shades or “black” strains.

In particular, Purple Haze has a rich-green base at the nug, with fairly light-toned purple shades throughout its trichomes. It also has qu

What gives purple marijuana its colour is the presence of compounds called anthocyanins. You’ll notice these anthocyanins are in fruits and vegetables like blueberries and beetroot, giving them their deliciously purple appearance.

7 Hacks to Growing the Perfect Purple Haze Weed Seed

1.     Less is More

Nutrients are a major part of any plant’s growth, but not all of them require the same amounts. Unlike its counterpart Purple Kush – which loves all the extra food it can get – Purple Haze takes more of a “less is more” approach to nutrients.

You’ll need to feed this strain moderately, especially during the flowering stage. All marijuana plants need nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous in order to flourish. For this strain, we suggest increasing the amount of phosphorous as the yield draws closer to the end. This will help boost the plant’s energy storage, making it ready for harvest.

2.     Choose the Best Soil

While you can certainly use a hydroponics system to grow this strain, soil works just as well. But if you are using soil, it’s important to use the best one. This gives your Purple Haze better odds at growing into a healthy plant with high-quality buds.

Luckily, this variety does well with the most basic of soil combinations – compost, peat moss, and perlite. You can even make your own organic soil, which Leafly has an excellent recipe for.

3.     Pruning & Topping

Pruning is crucial to the growth process, involving cutting off dead leaves and branches. This helps redirect the plant’s focus and encourages it to stop wasting resources on dead plant parts, and instead give them to living ones.

Topping isn’t compulsory, but it’s highly recommended. It involves removing the upper part of the plant from its main stem. This allows light and airflow to reach throughout the entire plant.

4.     Pump Up the Purple

The purple colouring of any marijuana plant is caused by its genetics, not by any other factor. That being said, you can technically enhance the violet hue with one simple trick – temperature control.

Reduce the temperature by up to 15° when night falls to help fast-track the decomposition of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is responsible for the green colouring of marijuana. Once chlorophyll is lowered, anthocyanins begin to appear in its place, initiating a purple hue. We don’t really suggest using this method as it’s really hit or miss, but you can try it to see how it works for you.

5.     Indoor & Outdoor Growth

Lucky for many of you, Purple Haze works well in both indoor and outdoor settings. Even better news for those closer to the north – this strain can be grown in cooler climates as its ideal temperature rests between 18° and 27°C.

Some growers have noticed that it produces larger yields in outdoor gardens, but it can work just as well indoors with the right love and attention.

6.     Lighting MattersLighting In An Indoor Marijuana Grow Room

If you are growing Purple Haze inside, then you’ll definitely need some high-quality lighting. This encourages better growth and potency. For best results, you should stick to LEC, CMH, HPS and Metal Halide lightings systems. (Not all at once of course – choose between one of those options.)

If you do happen to use LED lights, keep them at least 45cm away from the plants for 2-5 watt bulbs. Anything with a higher wattage should be kept almost double that length away from your plants.

7.     Know How to Reduce the Risk of Disease

Pests don’t play around, and you shouldn’t either when it comes to preventing disease. Some of the most common pests include spider mites, beetles, gnats and aphids. Once these critters get into your Purple Haze, it can lead to all kinds of disease, thus killing your plants if left untreated.

Prevent infestations by:

  • Sealing your indoor grow room
  • Changing clothes before entering the grow room
  • Making sure pets don’t enter the grow room
  • Thoroughly disinfecting your equipment regularly
