Knowing how to plant marijuana seeds is a bit of an art, but not in the way you might think. Germinating and planting marijuana seeds is quite a straightforward process, it just takes a bit of patience and a green thumb (as with any plant) to make sure everything grows and flourishes healthily.
After germination or “popping” which is the very first step when the cannabis seed sprouts, it’s time to then plant those seeds. This transferral step from germination to soil is one of the most crucial steps when growing marijuana successfully, as it can determine the health of the future plant.
Planting with soil is one of the most common methods, and requires some loose potting soil, water, a pot, and tweezers. Once the pot is filled with soil, poke a hole, gently grasp the seedling with the tweezers, and place it with the taproot facing the base before covering it with more soil. We’ll get more into hydroponic planting methods below.
But before you can even get to these steps, you actually need to get your hands on those seeds first, and the best place to get marijuana seeds is none other than The Seed Pharm. From auto-flowering to feminized seeds, you’ll find everything you need to get you started.
How to Plant Cannabis Seeds
There are two main methods when it comes to planting these seeds. It all comes back to the two most common ways to grow marijuana, which are using soil and using a hydroponic system. We’ll cover both methods.
After a successful germination, you will begin to see the seedling begin to sprout. It will look like a small root has come out of the seed. Be very careful with the seed at this step! It is quite fragile at this stage and needs to be handled with care in order to avoid a damaged seed.
Planting with Soil
- Fill several 4.5L pots or 2 to 4-inch pots with some loose potting soil (the number of pots will depend on how many seeds you have. One seed = one pot). We recommend using silty soil for the best results, but you can also use loam soil as it’s a mix of clay, sand and silt all in one.
- Make sure the soil is already moist and fills the pot about ¾ full. Don’t soak it, just a bit damp.
- Take a pencil or your finger and make a hole. As a general rule, the deepness of the hole should be double the length of the seed. In other words, the whole shouldn’t be too deep.
- Grab your tweezers and ever-so-gently drop the seed into the hole. If the seeds aren’t coming off the paper towel, spray more water on them rather than pulling them off and potentially breaking them. Important: make sure the root is facing downwards.
- Take more soil and cover the seeds lightly – don’t press down as this can disrupt the growth.
Planting with Hydroponics
- Use a Rapid Rooter to plant your seeds when using a hydroponic system.
- Keep the Rapid Rooter quite moist, but not drenched. For a top-feeder, keep the tube at the base of the pot so that the water isn’t drenching the roots of the seed.
- Put the Rapid Rooter on top of the pellets and add more pellets around it to keep it steady.
- Just like planting with soil, use tweezers to gently place the seed inside the Rapid Rooter with the root facing the base. We suggest using some scissors to cut the Rapid Rooter vertically in half to make it easier to put the seedling inside. The seed should be close to the surface so that it doesn’t have to grow very far. Close it up with the other half.
- If the root of your seed is a little crooked, don’t straighten it while putting it in the Rapid Rooter.
- Unlike planting with soil, you don’t need to cover the top of the Rapid Rooter or pellets. The top of the Rapid Rooter should be just peeking out above the pellets.
- With a Rapid Rooter, you can expect your seedling to pop out in just 24 hours.
How to Grow Marijuana Seeds
After the planting stage, it’s time to get to growing! Well, marijuana will do most of the work, but it’s up to you to care for the plant and keep it happy and healthy. This includes keeping it at certain temperatures, monitoring the moisture levels, and just keeping a general close eye on the plants to make sure everything is going smoothly.

Final Thoughts
The stage of planting marijuana seeds can be an underrated one, as many people underestimate how important it is for this step to be done properly. Know that you know how to plant marijuana seeds using the best methods, you can achieve the healthiest growth no matter if you use soil or a hydroponic system. Just remember that aftercare is another crucial step. Handle the seeds with a gentle touch as they begin to grow, and give them the best conditions with light, warmth and moisture.
